Last year we were privileged to have Simon Guillebaud sharing about his work with Great Lakes Outreach in Burundi.
Well we recently received this email from Simon:
A few months after Burundi’s war kicked off in 1993, a tract was circulated entitled ‘Abantu b’Imana bagiye he?’
Where did God’s people go?
That was the question many were asking in a country so apparently Christianised – how could so many so-called Christians not stop the horrific violence taking place? Where had they disappeared to? Obviously there were more superficial converts betraying by their actions what they confessed with their lips than true disciples living out their costly faith in Jesus.
Well, we don’t want to be accused of the same in this latest Burundi crisis – not that I am in any way saying there is a comparable war in the pipeline. Actually, mercifully few people have … Read More »
We are delighted to unveil the new-look Hill City website.
Regular visitors will notice that the new version of the site is far brighter, cleaner and fresher looking.
There is also a new logo that was developed by a team of Hill City members.
We would like to thank all those who have been involved in the design process.
What would you do if you turned up to church and the gate was barred, with a notice saying that an ‘enforced closure’ was in place?
This was the sight that greeted the Hill City congregation on a recent Sunday morning.
As cars pulled up and families gathered, people were asking questions and a sense of confusion was mounting.
“Where are the elders?”
“I heard they were arrested.”
“Where shall we go?”
“What do we do now?”
We headed down into a subway tunnel not far from the church, next to a public car park. Huddling from the wind and cold, we sang a few songs a cappella, from memory. A few people shared some Scriptures of encouragement, then with crackers and Ribena, using bottle tops as cups, we shared communion.
Apart from a cryptic text sent the day before, warning us to bring coats and bottle tops, … Read More »
As a church we have always sought to stand with brothers and sisters across the world who are being persecuted for their faith. One of the ministries that we are most grateful for is Open Doors, so we are delighted to announce that we have recently appointed Sophie Toovey as an Open Doors representative at Hill City. Here are some of her thoughts:
Open Doors is a Christian charity which focuses on strengthening the church in places round the world where it is very difficult to be a Christian.
Every year they publish a World Watch List of the 50 countries where persecution is the most severe. The main source of persecution currently around the world is Islamic extremist groups such as IS, Boko Haram or Al Shabaab. There are also some dictatorships like North Korea where there is very limited religious … Read More »
At our recent event ‘A Gospel Response to Human Trafficking’ Dai gave a list of trafficking related websites that he recommended checking out. For those who were unable to make a note of the websites, we have made the list available here (click the link and you’ll be directed to the site):
We are delighted to announce that in partnership with our friends at The Good Book Company we are now able to provide an online Bookstore for members and friends of Hill City Church.
The beauty of this bookstore is that we can promote some fabulous resources that we know are sure to bless and encourage you, while at the same time Hill City will benefit from 8% of all proceeds that will be pumped back into our local mission of reaching the valley for Christ.
The selection of books on offer is currently quite small but will be added to regularly, so make sure you check in regularly.
You can visit the Bookstore here.
We would like to congratulate Andy Toovey on his latest film-making success. Competing against some very talented film-makers, Andy recently won Enter The Pitch with his concept for Only Child.
Here’s how the Bible Society reported it:
Andy Toovey from Pontypool, has won The Pitch film competition this year with his short drama film idea Only Child.
Pitch competition entries have to be based on a Bible story or character. 30 year old Andy pitched a film idea based on the story of David and Bathsheba to a panel of five industry judges at Pinewood Film Studios. His story, Only Child, is told from Bathsheba’s perspective and set in a contemporary gypsy community. The story is about a dysfunctional couple, who have a child who tragically dies and explores how they grapple with and share their grief.
Speaking after the judges announced their decision Andy … Read More »

At Hill City we are getting increasingly serious about wanting to go deeper in prayer individually, within our families and as a wider church family. Therefore yesterday was an exciting day for us as we introduced our new Hill City prayer co-ordinators, Andy and Sophie. They did a great job of leading us in prayer as a church family and also unveiled a new initiative to help us in our prayer adventure: Prayer Mob.
Prayer Mob is a simple daily text service that will be used to encourage members of Hill City Church in their daily devotions and keep us updated with latest news and prayer requests from across the church and our related ministries.
If you are a member of Hill City and would like to be part of Prayer Mob just let us know and join movement.
